History and Evolution of Volleyball

Volleyball is a sport where two teams of six players hit a ball over a net and try to make it land on the other side.

It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a YMCA director in Massachusetts, who wanted a less vigorous indoor sport than basketball. He called it “mintonette” and used elements from tennis, handball, baseball and basketball. The name “volleyball” was suggested by a professor at a YMCA conference in 1896.

The sport spread across the world through the YMCA and the American troops in World War I. The rules changed over time to suit the players’ skills and strategies. Volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1964 and has many variations such as beach, indoor, sitting and snow volleyball.

It is governed by the FIVB and played at different levels of education, recreation and professional leagues. Volleyball is a sport that combines physical, mental and teamwork aspects and is enjoyed by millions of people.
